Meena Makhijani brings the South Asian element to Asian Crisis. Her main instrument is the tabla, but she is known to break out the dhol (a two headed drum from Panjab).

Meena began her strong interest in percussion at the age of 10. While growing up in the Bay Area and Southern California, she made a conscious effort to become well versed in a variety of genres ranging from concert, jazz and marching bands (even doing a stint with the Cal Marching Band on snare drum), to orchestral settings.

As a young adult Meena started creatively exploring her South Asian roots by dedicating herself to the study of the tabla. Fortunately for Meena, her father Suresh Makhijani, an exceptional vocalist and instrumentalist, was her earliest teacher. Soon after, she had the honor of studying under the world-renowned tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain.
Meena plays in a way that respects the tradition of her instrument, while paying tribute to her love of Caribbean, West African, and other new and old world influences.

Meena is also an accomplished dancer in the Indian classical tradition, Bharata Natyam, and is a company member of Kalanjali, Dances of India.

She made her solo debut, or Arangetram, in Los Angeles in 2000.
