John currently lives and works in L.A. He currently works as an independent consultant for L.A. nonprofits and also works at the Advancement Project L.A. At the Advancement Project, John works as the overall manager of the program as well the facilitator and convener of the Healthy City Partnership. John has been working for social justice and community development for the past 8 years in both the San Francisco Bay Area and in Los Angeles. As the Executive Director of the Korean Community Center of the East Bay, John significantly expanded the agency's programs and capacity while developing new programs in the areas of Domestic Abuse, Immigrant Senior Support and also implemented ground breaking, highly regarded model for Community Technology through faith-based organizing. Throughout his work, John has maintained a particular commitment to low-income youth organizing and leadership development. As a Site Coordinator for the AYPAL (Asian Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership) Program, he mediated racial tensions among students of color and organized students to successfully institute an Ethnic Studies requirement in all Oakland Public High Schools.

John's work has been recognized by the Bay Area's KQED/Channel 9 with the 2001 Local Hero of the Year Award and by Oakland's Mayor Jerry Brown with the proclamation of a "John K Kim Day" in that city. As a nonprofit consultant in Los Angeles, John has also worked on other regional technology and technical assistance programs for L.A. nonprofits.
